Self Help Africa’s mission is to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality and the impact of climate change through community-led, market-based and enterprise-focused approaches, so that people have access to nutritious food, clean water, decent employment and incomes, while sustaining natural resources.
Why We Partner
Self Help Africa employs an integrated, multi-sectoral model, which brings together livelihoods, WASH, agriculture, nutrition, climate resilience, market systems, and natural resource management under one umbrella. This approach recognizes that rural poverty and climate vulnerability are interconnected challenges that require coordinated solutions rather than isolated sector interventions.
Impact
Shockwave’s investment will enable Self Help Africa to strengthen the water and food security of communities in Malawi by ensuring that WASH services, water resources, and local infrastructure can withstand and adapt to increasing climate shocks. Our partnership will enable them to do three critical things:
- Improve the resiliency of WASH infrastructure by upgrading, and flood-proofing of critical water points.
- Support catchment restoration and sustainable land management practices that improve groundwater recharge, water quality, and long-term water availability.
- Enhance district-level planning and coordination, supporting sustainability and institutionalization of climate-resilient WASH practices.
